We are Jamie and Grace, an adventurous couple from the UK, decided to escape the hustle and bustle of their daily lives by embarking on a 10-day holiday to the mesmerizing island of Sri Lanka. To make our dream vacation seamless and unforgettable, we entrusted Tropics Joy Travels with planning the entire journey. From the golden beaches of Negombo to the wildlife-rich Yala and the serene shores of Hikkaduwa, our trip was filled with breathtaking sights and unforgettable experiences.

Day 1: Arrival in Negombo

Sri Lankan adventure began with a warm welcome at Bandaranaike International Airport by the Tropics Joy Travels team. They were whisked away to their charming beachfront hotel (Jetwing Blu) in Negombo. After a refreshing welcome drink and some rest, they took a leisurely stroll along the bustling Negombo Beach, exploring the local fish market and enjoying a delicious seafood dinner by the sea.

Day 2: Exploring Kegalle and to Kandy

The second day we decided to visit an Elephant Orphanage in Kegalle and according to the recommendation from Tropics Joy, we came across Millenium Elephant foundation where elephant roam free without chains. This was the first big highlight of the trip and enjoyed it a lot with activities provided by the foundation. Also, the lunch prepared in the big bungalow was top notch. If you decide to visit this place, make sure to get the full activity package from the travel company itself to save money. Then we spotted some spice gardens on our way to Kandy and though of checking one out as we love Sri Lankan spices and herbal products. A warm welcome with an explosion of scents and colors. Located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s spice-growing region, these gardens are meticulously maintained and offer a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the main road. A knowledgeable guide greeted us, ready to take on a tour of the aromatic treasures. The guided tour began with an introduction to the garden’s history and the significance of spices in Sri Lankan culture. As we strolled through the verdant pathways, the guide pointed out various spice plants, sharing fascinating details about their uses and benefits. Upon arrival in Kandy, they checked into Kings Pavilion, a cozy boutique hotel arranged by Tropics Joy Travels.

Day 3: Magical Kandy

On the third day after a hearty breakfast, we set off to explore the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Firstly, nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, Kandy, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic stands as a beacon of spirituality and historical significance. We found this visit to this revered site to be one of the most profound experiences of our trip. Make sure to visit the during ritual times as the monks open the inner chamber, where the tooth relic is kept. While visitors cannot see the relic itself, which is kept in a golden casket, the chamber exuded a profound sense of spirituality. Devotees gathered to offer flowers and prayers, creating an atmosphere of reverence and devotion.

The rest of the day we spent exploring the lush surroundings of Kandy. We strolled through the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, captivated by the vibrant flowers and towering trees. We also visited a traditional Kandyan workshop, and witnessed artisans create intricate handicrafts. The day concluded with a scenic walk around Kandy Lake, where we enjoyed the tranquil ambiance and beautiful views.

Day 4: Scenic Train Ride to Ella

The fourth day of the trip we embarked on one of the most scenic train journeys in the world, from Kandy to Ella. We were spellbound by the breathtaking landscapes of rolling tea plantations, lush forests, and cascading waterfalls. Tropics Joy Travels had reserved window seats for us, ensuring we had the best views throughout the journey. In Ella, we checked into a charming hillside hotel called 98 Acres with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

As we disembarked and made our way to our charming hillside hotel, Grace and I couldn’t stop talking about the train ride. It had been more than just a mode of transportation; it was a journey that touched our hearts and souls. The incredible landscapes, the camaraderie with fellow travelers, and the simple joy of watching the world go by from our window made it an experience we would cherish forever.

Our journey from Kandy to Ella, meticulously arranged by Tropics Joy Travels, had exceeded all our expectations. It was a reminder of the beauty that exists in the world and the joy of discovering it together. If there’s one piece of advice I’d give to anyone traveling to Sri Lanka, it’s this: don’t miss the train ride from Kandy to Ella. It’s a journey that will stay with you long after the tracks have ended, and the train has stopped.

Day 5: Exploring Ella

Hiking to Little Adam’s Peak

Our first morning in Ella began with an exhilarating hike to Little Adam’s Peak. Named after the larger Adam’s Peak due to its similar shape, this trek is perfect for all fitness levels. The trail winds through lush tea plantations, offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. As we reached the summit, the breathtaking vista of rolling green hills and distant mountains was a reward that made the early morning wake-up call worthwhile. The sunrise from Little Adam’s Peak painted the sky with hues of orange and pink, creating a serene and magical atmosphere.

Exploring the Nine Arches Bridge

One of the most iconic landmarks in Ella is the Nine Arches Bridge, an architectural marvel from the colonial era. After our hike, Grace and I made our way to this stunning bridge, which is surrounded by dense jungle and vibrant tea fields. The bridge, built entirely of stone and bricks without any steel, spans a lush valley and is a testament to the ingenuity of its builders. We spent time walking along the tracks, capturing photos, and even witnessing a train crossing the bridge—an experience that felt like stepping back in time.

Visiting Ravana Falls

Ella is home to several beautiful waterfalls, and Ravana Falls is among the most popular. Named after the legendary king Ravana from the Ramayana epic, this cascading waterfall is a sight to behold. We took a tuk-tuk ride to the falls, enjoying the scenic journey through the countryside. Upon arrival, the sound of rushing water and the sight of the powerful cascade were invigorating. We took a dip in the cool, refreshing waters and relaxed on the rocks, soaking in the natural beauty and tranquility of the surroundings.

Day 6: Third day in Ella and conquering Ella rock mountain.

The day began before dawn, with a wake-up call that felt almost too early. But the promise of watching the sunrise from the top of Ella Rock was enough motivation to get us moving. Armed with sturdy hiking boots, water bottles, and a sense of excitement, we set off from our hotel. Tropics Joy Travels had arranged a local guide for us, whose expertise would prove invaluable on the unmarked trails. The first part of the hike took us through the sleepy town of Ella, which was just beginning to stir. The cool morning air was refreshing, and as we left the town behind, the path led us through railway tracks. The trail then transitioned into a more challenging ascent. As we climbed higher, the path became steeper and rockier. This is where our guide’s expertise truly came into play, as he navigated us through the less obvious routes and pointed out interesting flora and fauna along the way. The dense forest provided a welcome canopy, shielding us from the sun as it began to rise higher in the sky. After about two hours of steady climbing, we emerged from the forest to a more open terrain. The final stretch was a scramble over rocks, which, though tough, was incredibly rewarding. As we reached the summit, the view that greeted us was nothing short of spectacular. The rolling hills, verdant valleys, and distant peaks created a panoramic vista that took our breath away. The sense of achievement was palpable, and we spent a good while simply soaking in the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings.

Day 7: Into the Jungles of Sri Lanka

We proceeded to travel further south to Yala to experience the jungles in Sri Lanka. The excitement continued with a thrilling afternoon safari in Yala National Park on day seven. we reached Yala in 2.5 hours and were eager to spot leopards, elephants, and other wildlife. Tropics Joy Travels provided omne of the best naturalist with driver and jeep who ensured they had a fantastic safari experience, sharing insights about the park’s diverse flora and fauna. We were super lucky to witness a leopard gracing through grass and several elephants up close.

Day 8: off to the best beach

After the exhilarating safari yesterday, our plan was to do another safari in the morning the following day but we decided to head to the beach as we were too eager for beach. Most important thing was the travel company was very flexible and changed the plans according to our desires. First thing in the morning we headed to the coastal town of Hikkaduwa for some relaxation.

We arrived in Hikkaduwa after a scenic drive along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The laid-back vibe of the beach town immediately put us at ease. Our beachfront resort, arranged by Tropics Joy Travels, offered stunning views of the Indian Ocean and direct access to the beach. The sound of the waves crashing gently on the shore was the perfect backdrop as we settled into our cozy room.

Day 9: Exploring Hikkaduwa

Beach Bliss and Coral Reefs

Our first day in Hikkaduwa was all about enjoying the beach. We woke up to a spectacular sunrise and headed straight to the shore. The soft, golden sand felt wonderful beneath our feet as we strolled along the coastline. The clear, warm waters were inviting, and we spent the morning swimming and floating in the gentle waves.

Snorkeling Adventure

Hikkaduwa is renowned for its vibrant coral reefs, and snorkeling was high on our list of activities. We rented snorkeling gear from a local shop and, under the guidance of an experienced instructor, set off to explore the underwater world. The coral gardens were teeming with colorful fish, and we even spotted a few sea turtles gracefully gliding through the water. The vivid corals and diverse marine life created a mesmerizing underwater spectacle that we will never forget.

Relaxing Afternoon

After our snorkeling adventure, we returned to our resort for a leisurely lunch at the beachfront restaurant. The fresh seafood, combined with the stunning ocean views, made for a delightful meal. We spent the afternoon lounging on beach chairs, sipping on refreshing coconut water, and reading our favorite books. The laid-back atmosphere and the soothing sound of the ocean waves created the perfect setting for relaxation.

Day 10: Departure from Colombo

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end but we swore that we will be back soon. On our final day, we headed to Colombo, where we had a few hours to explore the bustling city before the flight. Tropics Joy Travels ensured they had a comfortable transfer to the airport, where me and Grace bid farewell to Sri Lanka with hearts full of unforgettable memories.
